great pictures, non-arabic letters

Great Price, Good Selection, But Sparse FootnotesI recommend this Dover edition, but with some reservation. The price is low, the print is large and easy to read, but the footnotes are sparse. I relied on both a good dictionary for help with archaic words and on Thomas Bulfinch's "The Age of Fable" for aid in unraveling obscure poetic references to Greek and Roman mythology.
If you don't have some familiarity with Shakespeare or other 17th century poets or writers, you might consider an edition with more complete annotation. I suggest either the Oxford World's Classics "Selected Poetry" by John Milton (more extensive footnotes, but somewhat inaccessible in an appendix) or the Everyman edition, "Complete English Poems, Of Education and Aeropagitica" (footnotes at the page bottom, but the print throughout is a bit small.)

It's a classic

A pleasant surprise

nice postcards

Great stories, not enough picturesThe only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have as many illustrations as stories. Some of the stories aren't illustrated at all, & my daughter does not like this one bit.
I highly recommend the Grimm volumes from this series as a way of introducing your children to authentic fairy tales, preferably before they read/see the Disnified versions. Not only are they richer in language & imagery, & more culturally resonant, they also serve as an answer to the criticism that fairy tales are bad for girls because the heroines are passive & dependent upon others, especially men, for their salvation. In this volume, for instance, Sleeping Beauty awakens because her 100 years of sleep are finished. The spell was completed, which was why this particular prince was able to enter the castle & kiss her, while all the others who had tried had snagged on the thorns surrounding the enchanted castle. She did not awaken BECAUSE he kissed her.
To cite another example, after the huntsman rescues Red Riding Hood & her grandmother from the wolf, the next time another wolf comes to the door, the woman & girl work together to kill him.
In general, Grimm heroines do not wait passively to be rescued.

A nice selection

Making History Interesting For Kids. The book tells the story surrounding the Amistad. However, it is told in a way that is appealing to both youth and adults. The language is simple and the story is straightforward. There is no historical gobbly-gook here.
I found the book to be rather interesting, quite informative, and fairly easy to read (I read it in less than two days). It makes a great gift for any young history buff or anyone who is interesting in learning more about the Amistad but who hasn't studied much history.

Interesting (but a little dry) period piece.

Classical Scores Cheap! The size of the book is perfect. Small enough to carry with you on the bus ride to work, but large enough to easily read.
If you have never read the score to Beethoven's 5th I highly recommend buying this book. It's fascinating to see how Beethoven uses the four note motive throughout the entire symphony.
The only problem I have with this book is that unlike most of the other Dover Miniature Scores, the movement number is not printed at the top of the page.
However, the cover, the majority of the index page, and the key in the back are all written in oriental characters. I'd like to be able to pass along more information then that, but I don't know enough about non-Arabic characters to say whether they're Japanese or Chinese (and, in fact, would not be surprised if someone were to inform me that they were something else entirely).
The stickers themselves are fun and clearly drawn, so I'm not dissapointed!
