Sea Animals/Japanese (Dover Little Activity Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1994)
Authors: Steven James Petruccio and Dover Publications Inc
Average review score:

great pictures, non-arabic letters
There are 16 stickers in this book. Each one is a realistic color drawing of a creature found in the sea. For example: a whale, a squid, a shark, a turtle, a penguin, a starfish, a seal, a walrus, etc. Each sticker is numbered, and the numbers correspond to a key in the back of the book.

However, the cover, the majority of the index page, and the key in the back are all written in oriental characters. I'd like to be able to pass along more information then that, but I don't know enough about non-Arabic characters to say whether they're Japanese or Chinese (and, in fact, would not be surprised if someone were to inform me that they were something else entirely).

The stickers themselves are fun and clearly drawn, so I'm not dissapointed!

Selected Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1993)
Author: John Milton
Average review score:

Great Price, Good Selection, But Sparse Footnotes
Excluding the lengthy epic poems Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, this Dover Thrift edition provides nearly all of John Milton's poetry that you are likely to encounter, including the 45-page dramatic poem Samson Agonistes.

I recommend this Dover edition, but with some reservation. The price is low, the print is large and easy to read, but the footnotes are sparse. I relied on both a good dictionary for help with archaic words and on Thomas Bulfinch's "The Age of Fable" for aid in unraveling obscure poetic references to Greek and Roman mythology.

If you don't have some familiarity with Shakespeare or other 17th century poets or writers, you might consider an edition with more complete annotation. I suggest either the Oxford World's Classics "Selected Poetry" by John Milton (more extensive footnotes, but somewhat inaccessible in an appendix) or the Everyman edition, "Complete English Poems, Of Education and Aeropagitica" (footnotes at the page bottom, but the print throughout is a bit small.)

Selected Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1997)
Author: Paul Laurence Dunbar
Average review score:

A pleasant surprise
For all the times I've read that this poet-friend of the Wright Brothers is best known for his dialect poems, I'd never really considered the corollary: that he was a fine poet in standard English as well. And what poems they are! If poetry is supposed to be a subjective and emotional art, Mr. Dunbar has mastered it. I felt my heart wrenched over more than one poem. This is a very nice volume to have if one wants a sampling of Mr. Dunbar's art in an inexpensive format. Dover has done a great job in the selection, balancing the dialect poems and the standard English ones. If you only want one volume from this poet, this is the one to get.

Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales (Dover Children's Thrift Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1992)
Authors: Wilhelm Grimm, Harriet Golden, and Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm
Average review score:

Great stories, not enough pictures
This book has some of my favorite Grimm fairy tales, & others which I have never had the opportunity to read before. In addition to Sleeping Beauty, it has Hansel & Gretel, The Frog Prince, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, Tom Thumb, & Rapunzel (my childhood favorite.)

The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have as many illustrations as stories. Some of the stories aren't illustrated at all, & my daughter does not like this one bit.

I highly recommend the Grimm volumes from this series as a way of introducing your children to authentic fairy tales, preferably before they read/see the Disnified versions. Not only are they richer in language & imagery, & more culturally resonant, they also serve as an answer to the criticism that fairy tales are bad for girls because the heroines are passive & dependent upon others, especially men, for their salvation. In this volume, for instance, Sleeping Beauty awakens because her 100 years of sleep are finished. The spell was completed, which was why this particular prince was able to enter the castle & kiss her, while all the others who had tried had snagged on the thorns surrounding the enchanted castle. She did not awaken BECAUSE he kissed her.

To cite another example, after the huntsman rescues Red Riding Hood & her grandmother from the wolf, the next time another wolf comes to the door, the woman & girl work together to kill him.

In general, Grimm heroines do not wait passively to be rescued.

Sonnets from the Portuguese and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1992)
Author: Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Average review score:

A nice selection
I do not like many 19th-century English poets, but Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one that I do. Her Sonnets from the Portuguese are some of the most honest love poems I have read, and the other poems in this selection are a good reminder that she tackled many social issues as well. However, as a dog person, my favorite poem has to be To Flush, My Dog, a tribute to her faithful companion.

The Story of the Amistad (Dover Juvenile Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 2001)
Author: Emma Gelders Sterne
Average review score:

Making History Interesting For Kids.
Until the movie AMISTAD was released five years ago, most Americans had never heard of the famed slave ship that caused such a ruckus and illustrated to the world how fractured the United States was on the issue of slavery. Taking it's cue from the movie, this book had it's named changed from THE LONG BLACK SCHOONER to THE STORY OF THE AMISTAD.

The book tells the story surrounding the Amistad. However, it is told in a way that is appealing to both youth and adults. The language is simple and the story is straightforward. There is no historical gobbly-gook here.

I found the book to be rather interesting, quite informative, and fairly easy to read (I read it in less than two days). It makes a great gift for any young history buff or anyone who is interesting in learning more about the Amistad but who hasn't studied much history.

The Suicide Club (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 2000)
Author: Robert Louis Stevenson
Average review score:

Interesting (but a little dry) period piece.
This is really three interwoven stories beginning with "Story of the Young Man with the Cream Tarts" and then "Story of the Physician and the Saratoga Trunk" and finally "The Adventure of the Hansom Cab." They were published in his story collection "New Arabian Nights" and involve a secret society of suicidal young and old men. You may find the plots predictable or familiar by now, but when you remember that he was the first to come up with these themes and situations, it's remarkable. Eerie and suspenseful.

Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 (Dover Miniature Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2003)
Author: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Average review score:

Classical Scores Cheap!
I find music to be more enjoyable when I follow the score and Dover Miniature Scores offer a great low cost selection of scores.

The size of the book is perfect. Small enough to carry with you on the bus ride to work, but large enough to easily read.

If you have never read the score to Beethoven's 5th I highly recommend buying this book. It's fascinating to see how Beethoven uses the four note motive throughout the entire symphony.

The only problem I have with this book is that unlike most of the other Dover Miniature Scores, the movement number is not printed at the top of the page.
